What is LECA - Expanded Clay Aggregate?

LECA - Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate
Description and Usage Guide

Introduction
LECA, an acronym for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate, is a versatile and lightweight construction and horticultural material produced by heating natural clay at high temperatures. This process causes the clay to expand and develop a porous structure, giving LECA its distinctive light weight and excellent insulating properties. LECA is recognised for its durability, environmental friendliness, and adaptability across multiple sectors including construction, agriculture, wastewater treatment, and hydroponics.

Composition and Manufacturing

Raw Material
LECA is made from natural clay, typically a montmorillonite or illite clay, which is abundant and sustainable. The clay contains a certain amount of organic matter and moisture, crucial to the expansion process.

Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing of LECA involves a specialised rotary kiln where the clay is heated to temperatures between 1100°C and 1200°C. The process includes several stages:
Pre-heating: Raw clay is dried and preheated to remove moisture.
Calcination and Expansion: At high temperatures, gases form within the clay causing it to expand, much like popcorn. This creates a honeycomb-like internal structure.
Cooling: The expanded clay pellets are cooled and graded according to size.
This thermal expansion process results in hard, round pellets with a porous internal structure and a dense, sintered outer shell.

Geotechnical Fill

LECA is used in geotechnical engineering for:
Embankments on soft soils
Backfill behind retaining walls
Road base fill
Lightweight infill in construction over old mines or landfills

Horticulture and Landscaping
LECA has become a staple in modern horticulture due to its excellent water retention and aeration capabilities.

Green Roofs and Living Walls

LECA is lightweight and retains water efficiently, making it ideal for:
Substrate layers in green roofs
Vertical gardens
Urban greening projects

LECA - Expanded Clay Aggregate Uses and Applications

    • Drainage layer in planters, pots, and raised garden beds
    • Hydroponic and soilless growing media
    • Substrate for green roofs and roof gardens
    • Lightweight aggregate in concrete for non-structural panels or screeds
    • Insulation and drainage layer under paving slabs or patios
    • Aeration layer in indoor plant containers
    • Base for indoor water features or decorative planters
    • Mulch or top dressing for potted plants to reduce evaporation
    • ightweight filler in landscaping mounds or garden berms
    • Drainage medium in French drains or planter boxes

    Notes:
  • LECA is lightweight and porous, making it ideal for drainage, insulation, and hydroponics, but not suitable for driveways, heavy-duty paths, or structural sub-base.
  • Its 4–10 mm size is perfect for small-scale drainage and planting applications.
