Using the Resin Bound calculator

Measure the area you want to cover in metres – length, width and the depth you want the material to lie at. The calculator multiplies the three to get the volume in cubic metres, then converts that to tonnes using the density of Resin Bound. You can enter the figures in centimetres, metres, inches, feet or yards; the conversion happens for you.

What depth to use

For a decorative surface such as a border or a path, 40–50 mm is normal. Where the surface will be walked on regularly, or driven on, use 50–75 mm and lay it over a compacted sub base rather than straight onto soil. Going deeper than about 75 mm rarely helps: loose aggregate stays unstable underfoot and you simply pay for material that is not doing any work.

Order a little more than the calculation

The result is the exact volume of the space. In practice, add roughly 5–10 % for settlement, for ground that is not perfectly level, and for the material that disappears into the base. Running out halfway through a job costs a second delivery charge, and a second batch of natural stone will not always match the first.

Volume, weight and what you order in

Aggregates are sold by weight, not by volume, so the tonnage is the figure to order against. One bulk bag holds around 800 kg, and a loose load tipper starts at roughly 10 tonnes. If the calculation lands between the two, compare the price per tonne on the price list – loose loads are usually cheaper per tonne but need 3.5 m of access and somewhere firm to tip.

Natural stone varies in density from batch to batch, so treat the weight as a close estimate rather than an exact figure. If you are working to a tight budget or a large quantity, ask for a quote and we will price the actual job.
